Biogeochemistry of Forested Catchments in a Changing by E. Matzner (auth.), Professor Dr. Egbert Matzner (eds.)

By E. Matzner (auth.), Professor Dr. Egbert Matzner (eds.)

Forest ecosystems characterize an incredible variety ofland use in Germanyand in Europe. they supply a few capabilities, or atmosphere prone, helpful to people, specifically biomass creation, law of the water- and effort cyde, C and N sequestration, erosion keep an eye on, game, and so they act as habitat for various species. the steadiness of woodland ecosystems in Europe as stimulated by means of the deposition of air toxins has been an issue of discussion for greater than two decades. in addition to atmospheric deposition, different environmental stipulations affecting woodland ecosystems, comparable to temperature, CO content material of the ambience 2 and precipitation, have considerably replaced long ago and proceed to alter sooner or later. Quantifying and predicting the consequences of those alterations on ecosys tem functioning are achallenge to atmosphere study and likewise a demand to set up sustainable use of wooded area ecosystems sooner or later. This publication summarizes result of long term, interdisciplinary atmosphere examine performed in forested catchments and coordinated on the Bayreuth Institute of Terrestrial atmosphere study (BITÖK), college of Bayreuth, Germany. It doesn't target to summarize all of the study of BITÖ okay some time past decade, which might cross some distance past the reports in those capture ments. in its place, we focus the following at the long term advancements within the biogeochemistry of carbon and mineral parts and at the water cyde, at either the plot and the catchment scale.

1996; Christen sen et al. 1996). In relation to the effects of atmospheric deposition on forested ecosystems and their sustainability, the 'criticalload' concept has been introduced (Nilsson and Grennfelt 1988; Schulze et al. 1989b). Matzner significant harmful effects on specific sensitive elements of the environment do not occur according to the present knowledge". Whlle the concept has several shortcomings (Cresser 2000), criticalloads have been estimated for European forests in the case of S, acidity and N deposition and have found access to European legislation on air pollution.

The forested Steigerwald is dissected by three west- to east-directed valleys dividing the Steigerwald into four low mountain ridges. The geological formations of the Steigerwald belong mainly to upper Triassic Keuper sandstones ('Blasen' sandstone, 'Coburg' sandstone, and 'Burg' sandstone). The sandstones themselves are intermingled with clayey-silty and water-impermeable layers as is the case with the underlying Lehrberg layer (Emmert 1985). Forestry is the predominant land use form in the western part ()f the Steigerwald region.

These extremely acidic conditions are representative for Haplic Podzols in this region and developed on bedrock with low contents of base cations (Guggenberger 1992). Only in the forest floor, with a high cation exchange capacity (CEC), are considerable amounts of exchangeable Ca and Mg stored.
